Argentine or Pensacola for lawns.
Also used extensively in pastures throughout
the Southeast. Stands colder soil temps, thus can be planted further north in Southern
States. Available from both seed and sod sources commercially. But usually planted using
seeds. Note that "officially" Tifton 9 can only be sold and purchased as a

good. Performs best with plentiful rain or irrigation. Will turn brown under drought
stress, but recovers fast. Not usually killed by drought.

Excellent

2-3 inches. Does not support low mowing. Is a lush full grass. Mowing can be required
every 5 days during peak summer growth (July).

Tifton 9 Bahia grass was developed in Tifton,
Georgia and is one of the newer varieties of the bahias. The quality best that is
demonstrated variety is the possibility to produce up to 40% more forage than the others
under the right conditions with rain and fertilization. Drought
tolerant, and will grow further north than the Pensacola makes this a very desirable
pasturage grass. With low fertility requirements, and the ability to be grown on sandy to
clay soils of low fertility it helps to extend the range of the bahias. This grass has a
better palatability with a finer texture than the Argentine or Pensacola varieties. The
area of adaptation is across the inner coastal south as far
Miami, Florida and
North across the lower transition zone. |
| Tifton 9 Bahia - Pastures |
| Tifton 9: For pastures it is the highest in protein of
the three primary Bahia varieties sold with longer blades and faster growth from
seedlings. This characteristic helps in weed competition. The best possible
planting of Tifton will be on ground not previously planted by another variety of
Bahia. This keeps the Tifton from crossbreeding with inferior Bahias. Planting two seasonal crops back to back with legumes, millets, ryegrasses, etc.
will help to keep old stands from growing back and prepare your site for seeding with the
improved Tifton 9. Soil testing will tell you how much lime and fertilizer
will be needed. If you have used legumes then the fertility of the soil will already be
improved. Best to plant on a weed free and prepared seed bed.
Tifton 9 is a longer bladed grass than other Bahia's. This hardy
grower can produce 25-40% more in forage than other Bahia's under the best of conditions.
Tifton 9 is sold in 40 LB Bags only.
