Above is an example of a Pensacola
Bahiagrass lawn in North Florida requiring very minimal maintenance (no fertilizer or
pesticides applied) other than normal mowing cycles. -- It results in an acceptable
low-maintenance lawn.

USES - Pastures & More |
Lawns: Millions of pounds of
Bahiagrass seed are sold each year for lawn purposes. Especially in Florida and the
deep South coastal states where the variety Argentine
Bahiagrass thrives. The Pensacola Bahia variety
is used for low maintenance lawns in areas south of the transition zone, even though it is
considered a coarse lawn. Its ease of establishment from seed, drought survival
qualities and resistance to diseases and pests are the primary reasons for its increased
use in Southern lawns.
Pastures: Bahia's are used extensively for pasture,
forage uses for both cattle and horses. Learn more about this usage at our pasture page.
Erosion control & Roadsides: Bahia enjoys extensive
use for these purposes due to its ease of establishment, low inputs needed for
maintenance, and its survival under harsh aspects of treatment such as traffic, etc.
Forage Usage of the Bahia grasses is for pasturage, limited
haying, rotational grazing, pine tree productions with/without pasturage, erosions sites,
in sod production operations, and combining seed for income. Areas of usage would be in
dryer, hotter climates and in soils of low to medium fertility. Hay can be cut but not as
easily as some other grasses because of the shorter growing habit. Rotational grazing in
conjunction with other pasturage grasses or legumes will extend the forage usage.
Wildlife Uses: Bahia stands can be raised in
conjunction with seasonal legumes, and grasses for the wildlife population. This grass can be maintenance
free for years and grow in the shady areas and among the pine trees Many birds eat the
seeds when mature and deer forage on it, turkeys are attracted to it for the seeds and
insects that drawn to it.

Planting in Pine Tree stands: Shade tolerant
Bahia grass can be, and is
grown in pine tree management programs on farms as ranches. Easily sown in new pine stands
while the ground can be smoothed and packed. The seeds can be broadcast or
mechanically spread and in some instances where large tracts are seeded may be spread from
air-planes. Tree growth is enhanced and forage is provided for cattle after the trees have
matured enough (usually about 1 ˝ - 3 years.)- This occurs because farmers apply
needed fertilization for the grass to develop as feed and the trees benefit in the long
term from this fertilizer. Added growth means more value for the timber market.
Seeding should be from 20-30 LB/A with soil amendments already
added. Since trees are usually planted in February this is the ideal time to seed the
grass but the period for seeding can extend into the middle of August. The methods used
are broadcasting, mechanical planting and Ariel seeding.
